How HVAC Systems Work

Heating

Heating is simple. Hot coolant gets drawn from the engine into a heater core. A front-mounted fan blows over the core, sending the warm air into the cabin.

Cooling

Cooling is more involved. Refrigerant gets pressurized in a compressor and turns into hot gas. A condenser cools that gas and transforms it back into a liquid. That liquid then flows through the expansion valve where it's converted back into a gas, but a low pressure one at this point. Lastly, an evaporator cools the gas down and a fan blows that chilled air through the air vents and into the passenger space.

How to Spot AC System Issues

You'll likely be able to tell when you're having trouble with your HVAC system once things get bad enough. Signs of failure include:

A steamy cabin atmosphere

You detect the syrupy sweet smell of coolant

You're unable to maintain a consistent cabin temperature

You hear a whistling sound coming from the air vents
