How HVAC Systems Work
Heating
Heating is simple. Hot coolant gets drawn from the engine into a heater core. A front-mounted fan blows over the core, sending the warm air into the cabin.
Cooling
Cooling is more involved. Refrigerant gets pressurized in a compressor and turns into hot gas. A condenser cools that gas and transforms it back into a liquid. That liquid then flows through the expansion valve where it's converted back into a gas, but a low pressure one at this point. Lastly, an evaporator cools the gas down and a fan blows that chilled air through the air vents and into the passenger space.
